Repotting 101: When and How to Size Up
Repotting sounds scary, but it’s one of the best things you can do for a happy plant.
Signs it’s time
- Roots are growing out of the drainage hole or circling the top of the soil.
- Water runs straight through without soaking in.
- The plant dries out much faster than it used to.
How to repot
- Pick a pot only 1 to 2 inches wider than the current one. Going too big can lead to soggy soil.
- Water your plant a day before so the root ball slides out easily.
- Gently loosen circling roots with your fingers.
- Add fresh mix to the bottom, set the plant at the same depth it was before, and fill in around the sides.
- Water well and give it a few days out of harsh sun to settle in.
